Today is the beginning of Pride Month, but lately, it feels as though there’s not much to take a lot of Pride in.

The last several days have been a horrific and painful reminder of the inequities many still face on a daily basis. Another beautiful soul has been lost to injustice, and our city, our state, and our nation have been in collective mourning.

The show of grief, anger, and sadness, as well as the subsequent display of community connection, camaraderie, and charity across all of our interlocking local communities—be they people of color, GLBT folk, artists, faith leaders, businesspeople, and more—is a stark reminder of how far we’ve come as a society, and how far we still have to go, especially in regards to remedying systemic injustices that people of color deal with every day. Healing doesn’t just happen in a day, but Lavender is committed to being part of the healing process and making for a better community.

George Floyd should still be with us. We mourn for his heartbreaking loss, and we mourn for his family and loved ones. His loved ones have called for an end to the violence, and we pray for peace in our community.

As we spend the month of June recognizing the work done by our GLBT pioneers over the last five decades to ensure the rights and safety of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, and queer communities, let us also continue to fight for the rights of people across all spectrums of humanity, and seek to prevent another senseless death like George Floyd’s from happening again.
