“The Fight to be Free” – Black History Month Guided Tours in Essex County

Celebrate and learn about Black History Month in Essex County with a guided tour in the comfort of an 11 passenger mini bus and explore the richness of our local heritage.

The route includes a scenic Detroit River drive thru Old Sandwich Town with stops included at the Amherstburg Black History Museum and Sandwich First Baptist Church – a first stop on The Underground Railroad.  There will also be a performance of traditional slave songs by the parishioners of the Church and the entire tour and story of “The Fight to be Free” will be hosted by a costumed tour guide.

Geology Tour
For those fascinated by the geology of the Lake Erie Islands with a focus on Pelee. Covers the Middle Devonian landscape, a look at drilling evidence, paleontology, glacial striations and erratics, evidence of caverns, the alvars, island quarrying and more.

Agricultural Tour
For those interested in farming and food issues. An overview of the history of farming on an island, a look at crop specialties, soils, and climate. The source of foods over the years, the co-operative movement, organics, viticulture and the current farming practices and crops are also discussed.

Cemetery Tour
The record of past residents is explored. Revealing lake tragedies, epidemics, early mortality patterns, waves of immigrants, veteran’s sacrifices, heroes and more. Includes a look at the Sheridan Point Cemetery as well as the Catholic Cemetery on East West Road.
